Okja
About

Okja (2017) is a film directed by Bong Joon Ho. It begins in 2007, with a corporate press conference by the Mirando Corporation, who deals in the meat industry. Lucy Mirando, the new CEO, introduces a superpig project, promising non-GMO, environmentally friendly, and good tasting product to the market. Ten years later, a young girl Mija and her pet superpig, Okja, are separated from each other. On Mija's journey to save Okja from the Mirando Corporation's true intentions, she encounters the Animal Liberation Front, who are essentially vegan vigilantes. Ultimately, Mija is successful, but the Mirando Corporation lives on under new management.

Through the portrayals of the Mirando Corporation and its practices, the film clearly suggests that animal cruelty in animal agriculture is magnified because of the profit driven nature of capitalism. Yet, it sometimes questions the vegan mindset too, exploring the limits of ideology through the ALF. Through the themes of capitalism, GMO, animal agriculture, and veganism, Okja takes a clear stance against the meat industry and capitalism, while also providing limited commentary on some flaws of veganism.
