Mija

“Get Okja on the phone now! I want to know how she’s doing.”

Mija rarely speaks throughout Okja, yet her attitude is felt through the screen. It’s clear she will stop at nothing to get Okja back, including shattering glass walls, hanging onto a trailer truck, or learning English. Because Mija is orphaned, and raised by her grandfather, Okja is one of the only ways she can experience family. Her view of life is young and naive to the systems dictating the world around her. For instance, she asks Nancy Mirando, “Why do you want to kill Okja?”. To which she responds, “Well we can only sell the dead ones.” Of course, after this interaction and after seeing the production facility, Mija loses a lot of this naivety.

An Seo Hyun does a great job at playing the character, especially for a character with little dialogue - her facial expressions and body language express Mija’s determination greatly. Mija’s clothes also say a lot - for instance, when she decides to leave her home to go find Okja, she wears a bright red windbreaker, which shows her strong confidence and determination.
