Capitalism

Capitalism is one of the driving forces of conflict in Okja. From the very beginning, the super pig project is meant to revitalize the Mirando Corporation by providing a facade to the public. Through this facade, they are able to sell the super pig product to the public. One lens through which it is analyzed is through looking at how capitalism affects interpersonal relations. In the image above, Mija finally pleads with Nancy Mirando to release Okja for the golden pig. Despite learning English, the only language that Nancy Mirando is responsive to in the end is money.

Capitalism also enables police brutality. In the film, Nancy Mirando reveals that the company is on “good terms with the NYPD”, and the private security organization Black Chalk is called in to stop the protests, beating down on protesters. This is depicted in the image above. Jennifer, secretary to the CEO of the Mirando Corporation, does nothing, instead just watching.

The Mirando Corporation could be a reference to the real world organization, called the Monsanto Company. Indeed, they have very similar names. In fact, upon opening their website, the user is greeted with a message that could just as easily come from the Mirando Corporation - a message about revolutionizing agriculture through science.
